Overview
The Umbwe route on Mount Kilimanjaro is renowned for its stunning scenery, often hailed as the most picturesque among the trails. This camping route commences amidst the lush rainforest, winding its way to Umbwe Cave at 3000 meters, then ascending to Barranco at 3950 meters. From there, it joins the Kibo circuit, leading trekkers up to Barafu at 4600 meters in the alpine desert. This challenging yet rewarding path is best suited for seasoned hikers, offering a blend of serene forest strolls and a demanding ascent towards the summit. Rushing through it is ill-advised, as it requires careful navigation and appreciation of its natural beauty.
Day 1: Moshi – Umbwe Gate – Umbwe Cave Camp
After breakfast, depart from Moshi and drive to Umbwe Gate (1,800m), where you will complete the necessary registration before beginning your climb. The trail ascends steeply through the dense rainforest, offering an immersive experience in nature. The trek covers 11 kilometers, gaining 1,200 meters in elevation, leading to Umbwe Cave Camp (3,000m) after approximately 6–7 hours of hiking.

Day 2: Umbwe Cave Camp – Barranco Camp
After breakfast, continue ascending towards Barranco Camp (3,950m). The path becomes steeper, following a ridge flanked by valleys on both sides, offering stunning panoramic views of Kilimanjaro’s rugged terrain. The 6-kilometer trek takes 4–5 hours, gaining 950 meters in elevation.

Day 3: Barranco Camp – Karanga Camp
Begin the day with the challenging ascent of Barranco Wall, reaching 4,250 meters before descending slightly to Karanga Camp (4,000m). Upon arrival, enjoy a hot lunch, followed by rest and acclimatization walks in the area. Though steep, this 4.25-kilometer trek takes 3–4 hours, making it a shorter but rewarding hike.

Day 4: Karanga Camp – Barafu Camp
After breakfast at 8:30 am, continue trekking towards Barafu Camp (4,600m), your final base before the summit push. This 4.86-kilometer hike takes 3–4 hours through an increasingly alpine and barren landscape. Upon arrival, enjoy a hot lunch and rest before an early dinner. Take a short nap before waking at 11:00 pm to prepare for the summit attempt.

Day 5: Barafu Camp – Uhuru Peak – Mweka Camp
Your summit push begins in the early morning hours, trekking towards Stella Point (5,750m) before reaching Uhuru Peak (5,895m)—the highest point in Africa. After celebrating this incredible achievement, descend back to Barafu Camp for rest and lunch before continuing the descent to Mweka Camp (3,100m).

Day 6: Mweka Camp – Mweka Gate – Moshi
Enjoy breakfast before making your final descent through the lush rainforest to Mweka Gate (1,700m). This 9.1-kilometer hike takes 2–3 hours. Upon arrival, receive your summit certificate before being transferred back to your hotel in Moshi, where you can enjoy a shower, lunch, and well-earned rest.
